Starting
Friday, October 7!
Becoming
We The People is opening
a learning center to help children and adults with the extra
support they need outside of traditional schools and training
to be able to succeed at their education and employment goals.
The Learning Center will start in October 7, 2011. We will tentatively be operating Mondays and Tuesdays from 3 p.m.
to 6 p.m. The center is located at Kempo Jujutsu Martial Arts Academy at 8929 Indianapolis Blvd. Highland, IN 46322.
Kempo Jujutsu Martial Arts Academy has donated the space, but the program runs independently from the Academy.
What we are offering:
Tutoring
We offer tutoring to students grades K-12. This will consist
mostly of help with homework or particular issues with school.
As of right now, we can help with most subjects except foreign
languages (you can request Spanish help, but it will depend on
our tutor base). Students can come in to get help for an hour
on either of the days the center is operating.
Mentoring
Sometimes
the missing piece to success, whether in school or in employment
goals, is support. The
Learning Center will provide people to support participants in
their education and employment goals. If you need someone
to talk to and help you through, you can come to the Learning
Center. This is for children and adults. In order to have a safe place for children, all volunteers working with children will have to have a national background
check done.
Job Skill Trading
There
are many jobs
that do not require a college education or long-term training.
They just need to be taught by someone. We are offering
a place where people can trade skills. This can be just to
learn something new or to help open up employment opportunities.
For example, if one person wants to learn skills to be a
receptionist, they can come to the center and request help. They
can also offer their own skills to someone else, perhaps they
know how to change the oil in a car and can teach someone to
do that. We all know how to do a lot of things that we do not
think about teaching other people.
Employment help
We can also help participants with tips for job searching,
resume writing, interview preparation, etc.
Time
The Learning Center will be open on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. As the center develops, we will increase our operating
hours.
Cost
The Learning Center runs on donations. Participants can donate on a per session basis, whatever they can afford.
The recommended donation is $5 per hour, but no one will be turned away because of money.
Volunteers
and Interns:
We
are continuously looking for volunteers to help tutor all
levels (grades K-12). You can let us know what grade levels you
would be interested in tutoring. We are also looking for participants
to help with job skill trading.
We are also looking for interns that would like
to gain experience through running programs and helping to plan. E-mail us at learningcenter@becomingwethepeople.org
